USD 70-80 / hour
Contract: Part-time, approximately 5–10 hours per month for six months
Location: Remote, with availability during Eastern or Central business hours
Start date: ASAP
Overview
We’re looking for an experienced HR & Compliance Consultant to take ownership of ongoing HR administration and compliance needs across the U.S. and Canada. The immediate priorities are state regulatory requirements, including workers’ compensation, and ensuring payroll and benefits are set up correctly and running smoothly.
This is a hands-on role for someone who can spot what needs attention, follow through with vendors and internal teams, and keep leadership informed of decisions or risks without requiring day-to-day supervision.
Key Responsibilities
-
Regulatory compliance: Track and manage applicable employment requirements, particularly in California and other relevant U.S. states. Keep workers’ compensation coverage, registrations, records, and required processes current, and flag gaps with a clear plan to resolve them.
-
Payroll and benefits oversight: Ensure payroll and benefits arrangements are active, accurate, and working as intended. Investigate discrepancies and coordinate with providers, finance, and employees to resolve issues promptly.
-
HR operations: Maintain employee records and documentation, support routine employment processes, and keep compliance tasks organised and on schedule.
-
Practical HR advice: Advise leadership on employee relations, policies, and day-to-day people matters, bringing in specialist advice when needed.
-
Vendor management and improvements: Serve as the point of contact for relevant HR, payroll, benefits, and compliance providers. Improve processes and documentation where needed.
What We’re Looking For
-
5+ years of hands-on experience in HR operations, employment compliance, or a related role
-
Strong working knowledge of U.S. state employment requirements, including workers’ compensation; California experience is particularly valuable
-
Familiarity with Canadian employment requirements; New York experience is an asset
-
Experience coordinating payroll, benefits, and HR vendors and resolving operational issues
-
Experience with Rippling is an asset
-
Sound judgement, clear communication, and a track record of managing work independently
What Success Looks Like
Compliance obligations are tracked and handled on time. Payroll and benefits work reliably, with issues identified and resolved promptly. Leadership has confidence that HR matters are being managed, knows when a decision is needed, and does not need to check whether routine tasks were completed.
